Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
