The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
