The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will enjoy a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like award-winning actors.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the former royal to increase availability of musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
